1 Million Litre Ocean Tank Filtration System

System Aqua was commissioned to upgrade the aging life support system for the 1,000,000-litre ocean tank exhibit at the National SeaLife Centre in Birmingham. This upgrade was designed to improve both the performance and efficiency of the tank’s filtration system, while significantly reducing energy costs.

Key Features of the Upgrade:

  • New Filtration System: The upgrade included the installation of a modern filtration system, featuring a new pump set, two 1m x 4m protein skimmers, and a sand filter pump set.

  • Energy Efficiency: A primary goal of the upgrade was to lower energy consumption. The new system utilizes gravity-fed protein skimmers and sand filter pumps. Energy-efficient return pumps were also used, alongside larger discharge pipework to optimize flow and reduce operational costs.

  • Cost-Effective Design: The new system was engineered to offer a return on investment (ROI) of under 5 years, largely driven by the significant energy savings from the updated components.

Project Impact:

This upgrade improves the filtration system’s overall performance, helping to maintain optimal water quality and conditions for the diverse marine species in the tank. It also supports the National SeaLife Centre’s goals of reducing operational costs and enhancing sustainability.
